Smart Beginnings of Martinsville & Henry County (SBMHC) is a community coalition of public and private partners working together to develop an early childhood infrastructure that will effectively support families with the services they need, allowing them to better prepare their children so they are Ready for School and Ready for Life. The coalition was formed in 2007 and serves Henry County and the City of Martinsville.
Services for SBMHC are coordinated through The Starting Place, a one-stop resource center located at the local mall which provides information and referral, developmental screenings, parenting classes and support services. The work of SBMHC is focused in four key areas:
- Professional Development Workshops for Childcare Providers
- Parent education using a common evidenced-based curriculum by coalition partners
- Developmental screenings for children birth to age 5 (through resource center and partnerships with health care community)
- Development of a Central Data System for enhanced coalition collaboration, better service delivery and case management for families, and improved evaluation and assessment of community needs
